Resolving IGNITER Performance Issues

If you are having difficulty with your BBQ’s Electronic Ignition a quick visual inspection of the following will help to identify the cause:

  1. Check for un-plugged electrode wires or ground wire.
  2. Check wires for damage including tears or breaks
  3. Check electrode for cracks in the porcelain insulator
  4. Replace battery. Ensure battery is installed correctly
  5. Check battery igniter cap for proper threading
  6. Check gap between electrode, gas collector box and burner
  7. Check for damage to Electronic Igniter Box.
  8. Check to ensure that the Electrode sparks when the igniter button is pressed.

When the ignition button is pressed, a rapid clicking sound accompanied by a spark should be visible at all electrodes. If a spark is not visible, check the electrode connection to the Electronic ignition box.

Replace the battery. Open the Lid. Press Ignition button and listen
for rapid clicks.

If a “spark” is not visible at the electrode and burner connection:

  • Locate the Electronic Ignition box on the back of the control panel. Check all wire connections.
  • Disconnect the corresponding electrode wire and reconnect by pushing the wire in tightly at the connection point.
  • If the electrode still does not spark, but a spark and sound can be heard at the other Ignition points, replace the faulty electrode wire.

Note: All main burner, side burner and rotisserie burner connection points are the same.

Problem: Identifying the cause
Burner will not light
(with igniter or match)
  • Low or out of propane
  • Cylinder or the gas supply valve is turned off
  • Positive connection has NOT been made between the tank and the regulator. Regulator will not allow fuel in the line
  • The Flow Limiting Device in the regulator has been activated
  • Manifold valve assembly is damaged
Fire at control knob and control panel = Flash Fire
  • Burner port holes and/or Venturi tubes are blocked
  • Burner is improperly seated on valve gas jet
Yellow smoky flames
  • Blocked Venturi tubes
  • Excess cooking salts on burner
Flame blows out on LOW
  • Flow Limiting Device has been activated
  • High Wind condition – Adjust the placement of Barbecue to shield from wind
  • Propane is running low
  • Burner improperly seated on valve gas jet
  • Heat Distribution plates are not in position
  • NATURAL GAS MODELS: Installation issues related to incorrect size supply line installed and /or Water Column supply is not adequate for a Barbecue BTU rating of this grill. Do not use a longer Natural Gas hose than is supplied with your grill.
Burner does not get hot enough
  1. Barbecue needs to be preheated for 5 to 10 minutes with a closed lid. Outside temperatures will affect the amount of preheat time required.
  2. Flow Limiting Device in regulator has been activated and requires resetting
  3. NATURAL GAS MODELS: Installation issues related to incorrect size supply line installed and /or Water Column supply is not adequate for a Barbecue BTU rating of this grill. Do not use a longer Natural Gas hose than is supplied with your grill.
Low or incomplete flame (assuming burners and Venturi tubes are free and clear of blockages)
  1. Proper start up and shut down procedure not followed
  2. Flow Limiting Device in regulator has been activated and requires resetting
  3. Flame Tamers (heat plates) are missing or not in position
  4. NATURAL GAS MODELS: Installation issues related to incorrect size supply line installed and /or Water Column supply is not adequate for a Barbecue BTU rating of this grill. Do not use a longer Natural Gas hose than is supplied with your grill.
Too much heat /
Excessive flare up
  1. Excessive fat in meat
  2. Grease drain plugged
  3. Cooking system including flame tamers and cooking grates have a build up of grease that must be removed
  4. Lower casting of the Barbecue is clogged with grease
  5. Cooking on lower temperature setting. Reduce temperatures according to type of foods being cooked.
